The  kids get in the car after school or soccer and never tell me about their day, but the kids are on such a high after a day or a week with you, animated telling me all the cool stuff they are doing and learning.

All of Our Programs Are...

Our home-school, after-school, weekend camps, winter, spring and summer camps are experiential learning in nature and many are a total immersion wilderness experience. Our wilderness immersion programs focus on the Core Routines of Deep Nature Connection, finding and going past the edges of their comfort zones, rites of passage, being members of community, music, stewardship of the land, and supervised but undirected free play.  You will find in-depth discussion on these topics on our About Us page. This is not a part time "job" for college students, our mentoring staff are professionals following their life's passion; they have years of training and skills in their subject areas as well as in 8 Shields Cultural Mentoring.

Parents say “It feels like the mentors are aunts, uncles, and grandparents modeling skills we wish they could have learned as kids.”
Kids say “It does not feel like camp, it does not feel like school, but doing really cool stuff with a big family.”
What we hear most is “What are you doing?” “Can I try?” “You made it look easy.” “I did it!

Experiential Learning Nature Connection Programs

Our nature programs for the younger participants are primarily composed of undirected but supervised free play, storytelling, group nature games, and music.  As the participants progress in our programs they will get exposed to more powerful core nature routines and skills.

Intensive Deep Nature Connection Total Immersion Wilderness Programs

Our goal is that the teens graduating from our intensive deep nature connection total immersion programs have the skills to walk into the forest with just the clothes on their backs and not only have the skills and resiliency to find material necessary to make shelter, start fire, find and make safe drinking water, feed themselves, treat ailments and injury but to thrive, become a part of nature, and enjoy the experience.  Most importantly these experiences will develop in these people the common sense, the self-confidence, and the love of life they need as they move into adulthood.

Academic Math and Science

Our academic math and science programs offer rigorous yet in an experiential learning environment that uses the soil, plants, and animals of the wilderness, bay, gardens, farm, and ranch as our classroom and our labs to teach ecology, physics, chemistry, zoology, entomology, botany. The environment is real the problems that the students work through are real.

Art, Crafts, Literature, Philosophy

No matter what continent you descended from if you go back far enough we all descended from indigenous people living in nature, feeding, clothing, and sheltering themselves with plants and animals and looked to the earth, stars, sea, animals, and dreams to answer the questions. Their art, literature, and philosophy all tell their of their connection to nature. Our art classes the students make pigments using rocks, soil, minerals, and plants; paints from these pigments and milk, eggs, or just water; pots from clay from the creek, baskets from plants; the images from patterns found in nature. In our literature and philosophy classes the students read and hear the stories from elders of many cultures. Our mentors through questioning then draw out deep discussion from the students.
